Landfall, Grenada By Christopher Okigbo: 4 Robert Head, Mariner!

The place where you are tightly anchored,
the groundswell of ashy hillsides, the stirred canes
surging to cumuli cannot be heard,
Like the calm, bare ocean,
One motion bends the lawn where you were dropped,
and the tiered sea
whose murmurs you disfavored
thrusts out of sound.
.
Its moods held no mythology
for you, it was a worshiping place
of tonnage and ruled stars;
Your choose your landfall with a goodness's
casual certainty.
calm as that race
into whose heart you harbored;
your death was a log's entry,
Your suffering held the strenuous
reticence of those
whose rites are never public,
hating to impose, to offend.
Deep friend, such landfall going,
such mocking tolerance of those
neat gravestones elegies
that rhyme our end.
